What is a "Yujo"?
A yujo was a type of traditional Japanese courtesan, particularly prominent during the Edo period. These women worked in specific areas called yukaku (pleasure quarters), which were licensed entertainment districts. The yujo provided both companionship and sexual services, primarily to wealthy merchants, samurai, and other high-ranking individuals.
However, yujo were not just prostitutes. They were also expected to be highly educated in arts and culture. Many yujo were skilled in tea ceremonies, calligraphy, shamisen (a traditional string instrument), singing, and poetry. These talents allowed them to offer a more refined and cultured experience to their clients, creating an atmosphere of sophistication and entertainment.
The most famous pleasure quarters were located in places like Shimabara in Kyoto and Yoshiwara in Edo (now Tokyo). These districts played a significant role in shaping the cultural trends and beauty standards of the time, with yujo often being at the forefront of fashion and style.
Despite the glamorous image associated with high-ranking yujo, their lives were often challenging. Many had limited freedom and few choices in life, as they were bound by strict rules and contracts. Nevertheless, their impact on Japanese culture and history was significant, and they were key figures in the entertainment and arts scenes of their era.
